A river walk asks very little and gives back a great deal. Healing Ground takes that as its subject: the walking, and the company the water keeps the whole way along. The hour is late enough that the river has given up its colour for silver, while the cloud above it still holds light in lavender and cream.
The river is laid down in long, unhurried passes of silver and pale blue that scarcely break its surface, while the bank is heaped in ochre, russet, and green with every stroke left where it landed — nature in its abundance on one side, stillness on the other. The eye moves between them the way a walker's attention would: down to the water, back to the growth underfoot, out to the far shore, and down to the water again. NeuroArts has a long-standing interest in water kept within view, in how consistently its presence seems to settle us, and nothing in this composition lets it out of sight.
What the painting offers is not escape but proximity. It does not take us out of anything; it puts us beside something. Whatever the day failed to settle can be carried along this path, at the pace the ground allows, until it weighs a little less.
