Holding Ground

$5,760.00

Holding Ground arrives in the charged stillness before a prairie storm breaks. Slate, teal, and violet gather overhead in thick sweeping strokes, a rain curtain already coming down behind them, while along the far horizon a thin seam of rose light holds where the weather has not yet reached. Beneath it the land opens in russet, amber, and sage, and a worn path winds up through the foreground and into it.

Everything in the composition answers to a single golden tree. Rooted where the land turns from russet to amber, its leaves laid on thickly enough to take the light and keep it, it is the one warm note held against so much cool movement — and the picture rests on that exchange. NeuroArts is attentive to precisely such anchoring: given one steady point, the eye can take in a great deal of motion without being overwhelmed by it. The storm is not ours to direct; the tree is what allows us to stay and watch.

Holding Ground is a study in steadiness within change. At this scale the canvas places a viewer inside the weather rather than in front of it, and the tree is not untouched by that weather but present within it — which leaves a question worth carrying out of the room: where we find our own ground when the conditions around us are not ours to set.
