The Day Lets Go is painted at the moment colour breaks through. Light spills out from behind heavy plum cloud, laid on thickly with the knife, and spreads across the sky all at once — rose and lilac dragged on the diagonal toward a clearing of cerulean, peach and yellow pressed into long bands that run from edge to edge — so much arriving together that the eye is still taking in one colour when the next appears.
Below the horizon, all of it is gentled. The lake takes in everything the sky has offered and gives it back a register lower, the yellow broken into soft touches, the plum turned to lavender, the surface laid flat and calm against the dark rise of the shore. NeuroArts has long been curious about why water settles us, and here the lake is where the sky’s brilliance comes to rest — the same light, with nothing left in it to push against.
There is awe in a sky like this, and a particular wonder that it arrives at the close of an ordinary day, when the decisions have been made, the weather has passed through, and attention is finally free to be astonished. What lets go is not the day itself but its hold, and what is left is colour resting on still water, offered to whoever stays to watch it end.
